Neon Hanging Coconut Planter DIY

Neon Hanging Coconut Planter DIY

Neon Hanging Coconut Planter DIY

Have you ever crafted with coconuts? Well, I gave it a try a few weeks ago and it was a bit of challenge. The first thing you need to figure out when it comes to coconut crafts: how do you open the darn thing? I went through a few before I finally got the hang of it (I kept cracking them down the side, instead of across the middle). Once you figure out how to crack a coconut in half (I shared how to do that on the HP Create blog), you can turn your cracked coconut into my lovely Neon Hanging Coconut Planter DIY. I’m so happy with how these turned out (even though it took a bit of process to get the coconut cracking process down).

Supplies you will need for this project:

  • 1 coconut
  • 1 inch wide painter’s tape
  • Large knife
  • Primer paint
  • Neon acrylic paint (I used Martha Stewart Lightning Bug and Date Night Rose)
  • Higher number grit sandpaper and lower number grit sandpaper
  • Heavy duty fishing line
  • Dremel or drill with ⅛ inch bit
  • A Pencil
  • Small plant (preferably something from the succulent family)
  • Dirt (cactus dirt for succulents)
  • Free printable (you can find it on the original blog post over on HP Create)
  • Optional item: Super fine steel wool
  • Optional item: Hot glue gun and hot glue

Picnic Style: DIY Bon Appétit Crown

Picnic Style: DIY Bon Appétit Crown

One of the sure signs of spring each year is the resurgence of the flower crown hair piece. While I love this all organic accessory, I’ve found myself yearning for more. I want to imagine myself strolling along the Champs-Élysées in something that not only looks impeccable, but satisfies my soul – and appetite. The DIY Bon Appétit Crown does just that. This plateau de fromages is adorned with fresh, farm-to-table grapes, artisanal cheeses, and a hand forged, rustic baguette. Pair it with a crisp wine and you have yourself the crowning glory of hors d’oeuvres. This beautiful crown is the perfect snack on the go.

Learn how to make the DIY Bon Appétit Crown…

1) Use a piece of wire to make the base of your crown

2) Wrap the wire with floral tape

3) Use wire to fasten grapes to the crown for your base.

4) Once you have a solid base, fill the gaps with fresh foliage.

5) Use a cookie cutter to cut out flower shapes in your cheese, and fasten them to the crown with pins.

6) Cut thin slices of baguette and place them around the crown. You can attach them with wire or pins as well.

Strawberry Easter Egg DIY

Strawberry Easter Egg DIY

Strawberry Easter Egg DIY

When I was a kid Easter was one of my favorite holidays. I LOVED coloring the eggs and searching for them the next day with family. I especially loved it when the Easter Bunny would surprise us with a special egg that we had never seen! How did that bunny do it? Hee. How fun would it be to surprise the kiddos with these strawberry eggs? I know I would have loved finding one of these special eggs in my basket as a kid.

Supplies:

  • Bright White Inkjet Paper
  • eggs
  • needle
  • acrylic paint (I used from Martha Stewart)
  • 1/2 inch paint brush
  • small pointy paintbrush
  • bamboo skewers
  • hot glue gun and glue
  • scissors
  • free Strawberry Tops Printable (link found below)

Directions:

STEP 1:

Blow the yolk out of the eggs. You can follow my detailed how-to over on my blog. It’s pretty easy to do. Basically you use the needle to poke a small hole on one end (I put the small hole on the pointy part of the egg for the strawberries), then use the needle to make a slightly larger hole on the other end.

Put your mouth over the small hole and blow the egg into a bowl. Time for omelettes!

Run some water into the egg, blow it out, and let the eggs dry completely.

STEP 2:

Put the bamboo skewers into the larger hole of the egg and place in a cup to support the egg for painting.

STEP 3:

Using the 1/2 inch wide brush, paint the eggs with the red paint. I only needed one coat of paint for my strawberries. Let the red paint dry completely.

STEP 4:

Using the small pointy brush, paint little dots with the yellow paint all over the egg. These are the seeds. Let the paint dry completely.

STEP 5:

Print out the free Strawberry Tops Printable. I provided a front and back so you can print the leaves double sided. Cut out the leaves.

Gently fold parts of the leaves to make them look like real strawberry leaves. Use the hot glue to attach the leaves.

Cute Chick Boiled Egg Snack for the Kids

Cute Chick Boiled Egg Snack for the Kids

I’m always thinking of new ways to make snack or meal time fun for the kid (you can check out some past ideas here). So this snack idea was inspired by Easter. These little chicks are hatching for the Spring. These would be very cute for an Easter morning breakfast!

Supplies:

  • eggs
  • knife
  • carrot
  • tiny edible dots for eyes (I used black salt, could use sesame seeds or bits of olive)

Chick Boiled Egg Snack Directions:

STEP 1:
Boil some eggs (you can check out my how to boil the perfect egg post here). Let them cool completely.

STEP 2:
Peel the shell off the eggs.

STEP 3:
Cut the egg in half, then cut the bottom of each half so it has a flat base and can sit.

STEP 4:
Flip the yolk are around in the egg half so the round side of the yolk is face up.

STEP 5:
Cut some triangles out of carrot, and place them on the yellow yolk. Add the “eyes” and you’re done!

How To Make The Best Hard Boiled Eggs

The Best Hard Boiled Eggs

I don’t even know how many techniques I’ve tried to create the best hard boiled eggs. So many times, I’ve failed at the boiled egg situation (I tend to overcook them). For the past few months the technique below has worked for me over and over. I love keeping boiled eggs in the fridge, since they are such a quick and easy snack.

How To Make The Best Hard Boiled Eggs

Ingredients:

  • Eggs
  • Water
  • Salt

Directions:

STEP 1:
Put the eggs into a pot, fill with water to about 1 – 2 inches above the eggs.

STEP 2:
Bring the water to a rolling boil. At that point put a lid on the pot and turn off the heat. Note: if you have the type of stove top that cools fast, reduce the heat to simmer for about a minute. After that, set a timer for 10 minutes.

STEP 3:
When the timer is up, cool the eggs in some cold water and place in the fridge.

STEP 4:
When the eggs are cool, you’re ready! Note: eggs that are older are easy to peel. Eggs that are a couple days old are perfect for this project. If you don’t have that time, put the eggs in the freezer for about 25 minutes and then peel them. Don’t forget about them in there!

Come back tomorrow for a cute egg snack for the kids. Snack ideas!
