3-times-a-week-style: Austin

Texas Style Council Prom Style // thepapermama.com

3-times-a-week-style: I gotta say… the most stylish I’ve been in MONTHS was while I was in Austin. Yes, hot/sweaty/104 degrees + humid Austin. It was pretty much 4 days straight of all the makeup and pretty clothes…. I was sweaty and stylin’. Ha! BUT, it’s pretty hard to NOT be inspired by all the pretty dressed ladies (and like 3 guys) at the Texas Style Council.

Also, I’ve realized I keep mentioning how HOT Austin was, but I want to also say how that city is awesome. That’s what I’ve been forgetting to mention. It’s full of good food and neat shopping. Especially the South Congress area. The next time I make it out to the city, I plan on going during a non-super hot time. I’m guessing winter would be great (it would be like summer in Portland).

Even with the heat, it was a good week for my ‘dress nice for at least 3 times a week‘ goal. You know… cause usually I prefer to wear yoga pants 95% of thee time. Do you have any similar goals?

A Stupid Idea. Gluten-free me.

I’ve made a new choice. After some thought and bit of research…. I decided to give gluten free diet a try. It’s been over 3 whole weeks with no gluten. I mean… I even went to Austin and did not eat one bite of fried chicken (so lame). Here’s what really sucks: I feel better. Yeah. It’s not cool. Ok, it’s cool. I just miss bread. I want all the gluten. I NEVER realized how much I loooooved bread until I stopped eating it. I’ve had some gluten free bread and other items like that, but my mind keeps telling me to eat all that bread. Gah. I didn’t think I really ate that much gluten, but now I just crave it. Just typing the word ‘gluten’ makes me want to eat all the gluten. Mmmmm… doughnuts.

Please send pretzels, pumpkin bread, and fried chicken.

Faux Bob Hairstyle

Faux Bob Hairstyle // thepapermama.com A new favorite of mine, the Faux Bob Hairstyle. I wore this a couple of times while I was in Texas. It’s great when you’d like to wear your hair down…. but it’s too hot to really enjoy your hair blanketing your neck. I love it. Here’s how you can do this with your hair: 1. and 2. If your hair is mostly straight, I suggest adding a bit of curl (all the way up to those roots). Add hair spray to hold those curls. 3. Backcomb the back of your hair a bit. I do this AFTER I curl my hair, since my straight hair will just lose all of it’s backcombing if I mess with it too much. Some people like to backcomb BEFORE they curl their hair. 4. Separate your hair into 3 equal sections. The right, left, and backside of your hair. Tie each of these sections of hair at the ends with hair ties. note: I’ve seen people only use one hair tie for this, but I have many layers in my hair + it’s pretty slick. Three ties works better for me. 5. Pin all three tied sections UNDER your hair on the back of your head. 6. Pin any fly aways, or add pins to enhance curls, etc. Add hairspray, done! Enjoy! Family history.

Thomas Terpen Thomas // thepapermama.com

//The only known photo of Thomas Terpin Thomas//

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to sign up for the 23andMe program. The site’s pretty interesting. What is it? Well, you spit into a tube (ewww, but that’s how it works), send in some info and you learn about your health and family history. It’s all based on what they find in your DNA, etc. It’s been quite a journey and so interesting. It takes a few weeks to get your info, but it’s worth it in the end. I’m so excited about all I’ve learned! I even found a 2nd cousin I never knew about. Kinda cool.

I’ve always been interested in my family’s history. All this research brought me back to a story I’ve heard my grandma tell me over and over. It’s about one of my earliest known relatives:

“I’d like to introduce you to Thomas Terpin Thomas. A veeeery distant relative. He was known as “The Great Hunter”. In March of 1851 he loaded up two wagons to move his wife and 9 children from Missouri to Oregon. It was an eventful trip filled with attacks, lack of food, and one of T.T.’s babies was dragged aways by a mountain lion. LUCKily the baby was saved and only had scratches from the incident. They eventually made it to the Oregon Territory by August 1851. T.T. Thomas received some land under the Donation Land Claim Act and worked the land for 5 years…. and eventually owned this land. In 1858 T.T. Thomas ran for office in the OR House of Representatives. He won and served office through Oregon’s statehood in 1859.”

T.T. brought my family to Oregon and we are still here. Some of us moved up to Washington, but a lot of us are still in good ‘ol Oregon. I really can’t wait to get other member’s of my family on 23andMe (I mean, this place is the largest DNA-based service worldwide). Next up: my brother. He’ll have more info from my dad’s side of the family. I’m thinking that would be a great Christmas present (sort of for both of us, ha).

Ok, have you tried out this service?
