The Paper Mama in the City

It’s officially been 2 weeks since I hopped a plane and headed to New York. I arrived bright and early Tuesday morning at 6 am (not sure if I’ll try out another red eye… unless I have early check in).

I didn’t get any sleep on my flight. I’m talking zero. Zip. Nada. I may have fallen asleep at one point, but it only lasted for a couple minutes. The good thing about coming in at this time, Jess had flown in at 6 am too. So, I wasn’t alone in my crazy deliriousness. I think we guessed we were awake for about 40 hours straight (with a 1 hour nap somewhere in the middle). It was carazay.

Soooo, Jess and I shared a cab to our hotel, The Hilton New York (on the Avenue of  the Americas), and put our luggage in storage for the morning… since we still had about 8 hours until check in. Speaking of the hotel… let’s just say it was sort of disappointing. We all got an amazing discount (since it was for BlogHer), but it wasn’t anything special. The location is perfect. A few blocks from Central Park and Times Square. Buuut, I just found it weird that a hotel, in the big city, didn’t have a fridge or even a coffee maker in it. These items could be acquired for an extra charge. Pretty odd. I guess they needed to make the cash back from the discount they gave us? Hmmm…

ANYway… enough about the hotel. It was a roof over my head. <3

Back to me in the city: whenever we had time to spare, my roommates (Jess, Torie, Jenni, and Stephanie) and I took advantage of the beautiful city around us.

The City.

Radio City Music Hall + Times Square + NBC

And, this is Katie holmes in Anthropologie. Terrible photo… but, it really was her.

Empire State Building

Lovely interiors

Yes, I wandered to a flea market in New York! Kinda pricey, but very cool.

Random unknown buildings… just loved the sky reflecting.

  Aaaaand, the LOVE sculpture. <3

The Food.

And, there was food. Oh food. I love a good meal. One of my favorite things to do: check out a new restaurant. It’s probably a good thing we can’t really afford to go out to eat too often… I’d be so unhealthy with all the food I’d being eating. Anywho, I must share my food experience! The good, the bad, and the “did I really just pay $20 for that?”.

Morimoto:

We had a great lunch her with sweet Nicole, from Bluum. I’m most definitely not a sushi fan, but I really loved this lunch. Especially the spicy salmon rolls.

Sooooo, the entertainment here was fantastic. People singing and dancing while you eat. Love it! Buuuut, the food was pretty crappy. Ok, not pretty crappy: it totally sucked. I had the best meal of the group…. cheese and chili on fries. So, yeah. If you don’t care about food and just want entertainment, this place works! Plus: super expensive.

My favorite meal of the week. For sure. We randomly found this one afternoon… and enjoyed awesome happy hour prices! Those wings and one glass of wine = $8. Wha???? Yeah. In New York. A lunch for $8. Plus, the staff was sweet and I loved this little ‘ol pub. We ate here twice… Great food with a good price is a win.

Lindy’s:

I really do not recommend this place. At all. It was just down the street from our hotel. Soooo, the cheapest thing I could find on the menu was fries drenched in cheese and gravy. Out of the 8 people eating here… no one was happy with their order…. only the cheesecake was enjoyed. Ridiculously priced.

Hell’s Kitchen:

Oh yeah. Mac ‘n Cheese and Bloody Mary’s. Fantastic. There was a $17 all you could drink deal… Ha!

Angelo’s Pizza:

Yum. That’s all. Great NY pizza. <3

I will have more to share about this trip tomorrow… and I’ll also be chatting about Maaaaarrrrrrtha Stteeeeewwwwaaaart. I don’t think I’ve ever shared my super unhealthy obsession with her. Well, you will soon know. Thursday. Ha!

I should have warned you to NOT go to Lindy's. It use to be in Rockerfeller Center, I use to work in the building, and the food is not
only the worse but it's overpriced. Next time you want to go to Cafeteria on 7th avenue and 17th street. Best food ever! Glad you
had a great time in NYC. I love living here.

Psst! Where'd you run into a flea market?

We went to the Hell's Kitchen flea market. I believe it runs every Saturday (weather permitting). 🙂

Ah! Had I known that was where you were staying I could have told you, one foodie to another, the absolute best food cart in all of New York City, the one my friends and I would trek halfway across Manhattan in the middle of the night for, was the one RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR HOTEL! It has a serious cult following (myself, obviously included — I can't visit NYC now without stopping): http://gastronomyblog.com/2011/07/31/famous-halal

I saw that cart! Every time we went to go eat it… the lines were too long. I should have just waited.

We didn't make it there this time. I need to plan out my food a little better before I go to NY…. next time. 🙂

She just walked right in front of us. She was the only one wearing sunglasses inside.

The hotel was awful! The elevators made ZERO sense.

    • The Paper Mama on said:

Luckily we were only on the 7th floor. I heard crazy stories about the people staying on the top floors.

I agree with you about the hotel. In fact, I'm not sure that the hotel was well prepared for the crowds that were there. The location though – you couldn't beat it.

I feel bad for the staff cleaning up our crazy rooms….. so many girls in one space. 😀
