Mini Home Tour – Gallery Art Wall DIY

//Artwork from left to right: Family photos, a paint by number velvet ship painting from the 1970’s, illustration from a 1950’s art portfolio, gold Portland map from Minted.com, oil illustration of a girl from the 1950’s, kitty from Ryan Berkley, OUI OUI gold foil print from Swell Made Co, family photo, charcoal sketch from the 1970’s (found in Greece), illustration from a 1950’s art portfolio, and a pine cone drawing by me.//

I finally have a space to hang all of my favorite artwork! We just finished this art wall a couple of weeks ago and I’m very happy with how it turned out. Our eclectic taste in art is one way we add color to our rooms (I love white walls). This particular art wall is full of artwork that we’ve been collecting for the past few years and I’m happy to finally give these pieces a home.

When we began placing all of our art up on the wall I started to get nervous. How do I put a large gallery wall together? Are there rules I should be following? Where do I start? Well, I searched around online and decided that I will make my own rules. Here’s what I did:

  1. I picked out the largest piece we had (the girl in the blue frame) and decided I wanted it front and center above our fireplace, the focal point of the room.
  2. After the largest piece was up we could then decide what pieces were going up around the large picture. We worked our way out from there.
  3. To keep the art placement random we tried not to put similar frames and pictures together.

If you are thinking about putting up your own art wall, I have a couple of tips: work with another person (it really helps to have another set of eyes and hands) and use as many command strips as you can. Over half of the art pieces on that wall are attached with command strips. I like that there are less holes in my wall and if I want to adjust or change items out it’s just easier.

Many of the frames I used were from thrift stores, but I also have some out of the box Frames and custom framed items from Michaels.

//Artwork clockwise: illustration from a 1950’s art portfolio, velvet painting by a family member, custom illustrations of myself and daughter by the lovely Ann Shen, alien by my daughter, and a custom painting of my girls from Lady Noel Designs.//

The best thing about this art wall are the spots I have saved to hang kid artwork! It’s easy to do with just a frame and a cute clip. I can easily switch out kid art work anytime.

//Artwork clockwise: watercolor paintings by my daughter, another stylish lady, kitty from Ryan Berkley, Mt Hood from Monster Songs, hang in there from Sad Co Incorporated, puppy illustrations from me, and Nasty Woman embroidery by Sleepy Stitches.//

Do you love the built-ins around the fireplace? Yeah? Well, my husband installed those. Come back tomorrow to see the before and after photos of the fireplace and I’ll share what we did to install built-ins on a budget!!! It’s a huge transformation and I love having the extra storage.

Lunch Box Joke Jar

Each day this school year I have taped a silly joke into my daughter’s lunch box. I originally meant to only do it once a week, but she loves it so much that I now have a joke in her lunch everyday.

When school first started I was pretty good at getting her lunch ready and quickly coming up with a joke for the day, but as time went on it got harder to get the jokes ready. I would forget to put one in her lunch, or we would be running behind in the morning and I just didn’t have time to get a joke ready. Now that it’s the new year I have decided to make things a little easier for me. I organized a little Lunch Box Joke Jar. Anytime I think of a joke (or find one online) I’ll write it on these little cardstock triangles and pop them in the jar. With my lunch box joke jar I am ALWAYS ready with her silly jokes and I don’t need to stress about it each morning. I also keep pretty rolls of washi tape in the jar so I can tape them to her lunch box.

I found this super cute terrarium at Michaels to use for my joke jar (I think it’s only an in store item and not online). The washi tape and card stock is also from there. I just cut the card stock up into little triangles and popped them into the terrarium. I have about 40 jokes in there and I’m ready to pack all those lunches!

Whether it’s planning the family schedule, cleaning out your pantry or getting the kiddos ready to head back to school, Michaels has everything you need to help you get organized this year. What are you doing to make your life easier with school starting up again after the winter break?

DIY Paper Tree Wrap

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Pilot Corporation of America.

Store bought wrapping paper is fine for your holiday gifts, but why not be an overachiever and spice up that present? Today I’m sharing how you can easily add some pretty pink trees to your gifts with some craft paper and Pilot G2 Gel Pen. I swear this is quick and easy to do, plus your holiday gifts will look super cute!

Supplies:

  • white wrapping paper
  • colorful craft paper
  • double sided tape
  • pretty Pilot Pen pens
  • scissors

Directions:

Step 1: Wrap up your present. You don’t have to use white wrapping paper for this project, but it will really help to make your paper trees pop.

Step 2: Freehand cut a few different triangles from your colorful craft paper (don’t worry about the triangles being cut perfect).

Step 3: Use double sided tape to adhere the triangles in layers onto the front of the wrapped present.

Step 4: Use your Pilot Pen to add branches, birds, stars, ornaments, and other details (like the gift recipients name) to the triangle trees. Because the G2 gel ink uses pigments instead of dyes and the drawings are vibrant with beautiful colors.

You’re all done and now you have the cutest little wrapped present in town. It took barely any time to wrap. Are you doing any special wrapping this year?

Pilot Pen will make the perfect stocking stuffer! Maybe pair some pens with an adult coloring book? Pilot Pen would like to give you a little discount to use for the holidays: Get 20% off ALL G2 products. Valid now through 12/31/16. Just use this code: G2SWAY

My Moment of Truth: My 2016 Motherhood Journey

It’s official: I now have a one year old baby and in about a week my oldest kiddo will be turning 7! This past year has been quite the journey. One that I didn’t think I would get to do again. If you have been following my blog for a while you may already know the story about my first daughter’s birth. If you don’t know I’ll give you a quick rundown: it was risky and we both almost lost our lives. To be safe my doctors said we shouldn’t go through another pregnancy, but last Spring we got a big surprise… I was pregnant.

Before I found out I was pregnant with Willa I had resigned myself to the fact that I would not have another baby. I didn’t think I would be going through those baby years again, so with this pregnancy surprise all of these fears and doubts started to fill my head. First off, would I be okay? My doctor assured me I would with a lot of monitoring and doctor appointments. Could I go through those baby years again? They were pretty rough the first time around. Can I handle the lack of sleep? Oh man, I love sleep. Will a new baby be good for our family now that my first daughter was older? I don’t want to lose that connection I have with my oldest kid.

Because of my past complications with pregnancy, Willa was born 6 weeks early and we spent 2 weeks in the hospital with her. Two weeks with a tiny baby hooked up to numerous wires and the constant beeping of the machines in her room, along with the alarms from other rooms. Our start with Willa was not what I expected and there were plenty of moments, while I was in the NICU, that I broke down and cried because I was scared and I forgot how much work babies are. I cried for the potential loss of that special connection I had with my 6-year-old, I worried I wouldn’t be able to keep this tiny fragile human alive without the hospital, and I wondered how I could do this being six years older than I was with my first daughter.

Two weeks passed and we found ourselves at home with this teeny tiny baby that completely relied on us for everything. On top of that she would choke on her spit up constantly. I was feeling overwhelmed and worried that I couldn’t do it and I really doubted myself. I forgot how much work a baby really is. It had been 6 years. Could I do this?

Eventually we got into a routine and even though there have been a few rough moments this baby mom stuff feels (mostly) natural to me again. I was asked by e.p.t® to share an important moment of truth with you guys: For me my moment of truth came about two months after we got to bring Willa home from the NICU. I realized that I am strong enough to do this again and it’s okay to not always get this mom thing right. I am doing the best that I can and I have help! I have a great husband and Willa has an amazing sister that loves to help. I’m excited to see my daughters grow up together and become friends. Even though it can be hard to look past the tough moments, there’s no way I would change anything. I cannot imagine our little family without this baby and I’m so happy we got that surprise last Spring!

So if you’re reading this and you’re trying to figure out how to be a mom to a little baby: You got this! It can be rough and you are often alone with a little screaming creature, but it will be okay. Remember to ask for help when you need it (and sometimes even if you don’t think you need it). Remember to take care of yourself (I am still working on that). And, don’t forget you are not the only mom feeling a little lost. You’re not alone.

Nearly 40 years ago, e.p.t® invented the at-home pregnancy test and changed the way women find out they’re pregnant. About 8 out of 10 women first learned they were pregnant from a home pregnancy test, and nearly half said they took the test immediately after buying it (I know I did). The e.p.t® Pregnancy Test is over 99% accurate from the day of your expected period, so you can feel confident in your results. Thank you to e.p.t® for partnering with me to share my moment of truth with you. If you want to share your story use the #momentoftruth hashtag on facebook or twitter!

Day 6: Festive Christmas Wine Ice

Festive Christmas Wine Ice Cubes Festive Christmas Wine Ice Cubes

Day 6 of 50 DIY Days: Festive Christmas Wine Ice!

I’m not really a cocktail drinking kind of girl. 99% of the time I will always choose a glass of wine if I’m drinking. SO, when it comes to the holidays I like to get a little creative with my wine drinks so I can feel like I’m drinking something fancy. Today I’m sharing how I make some Festive Christmas Wine Ice so my fellow wine lovers can also feel like they are having a “cocktail”.

Supplies needed:

  • pomegranate seeds
  • one orange
  • mint leaves
  • white wine
  • optional: silicone ball ice cube tray

Directions:

Step 1: Cut up your orange into small little triangles and pick out some small leaves from your mint.

Festive Christmas Wine Ice Cubes

Step 2: Place a small portion of each of these items into the bottom of each little ice tray spot. Fun fact: it seems pomegranate seeds sink, so you’ll probably find them at the bottom of each ice piece.

Step 3: If you have the ball ice tray, I suggest using a tiny funnel for this step. Carefully pour wine into each ice spot. Tap the trap a bit to get any bubbles out and refill more if needed.

Festive Christmas Wine Ice Cubes

Step 4: Place the ice tray in your freezer for at least 6 hours. Overnight is probably best. That’s it! You now have the perfect little ice to keep your white wine chilled for your wine “cocktail”. IF you really like pomegranate, you can sprinkle some extra seeds into your wine “cocktail”. Yum.

Day 5: Apple Pie Butter Recipe (it’s so simple)!

Day 5 of 50 DIY DaysApple Pie Butter Recipe (it’s so simple)!

I’ve have shared this recipe a FEW times on my blog because I love it! There is no sugar added to this yummy apple butter spread and it’s quite easy to make. It does take a long time to finish, but you don’t have to do much. Just blend it every few hours.

In addition to the recipe, I’ve also shared free canning labels for you to use and maybe give these as gifts (if you can part with this delicious stuff).

Head on over here to the original blog post so you can get the recipe and download the free canning labels.
