My daughter grinds her teeth… erg!

She’s been doing this, well, forever! Since she’s had enough teeth to grind. I only ever hear her do it a couple times a night. Until last night… the poor kiddo has a pretty rough cold, and kept waking up. Instead of getting up and walking into her room 50 times a night, I decided to make a bed for us on the floor (p.s. we’ve never coslept before, something new).

Anywho, we slept next to each other all night and she woke up about 10 times crying (sad). In between all the cries, she spent her sleeping time grinding her teeth! It was exhausting for me. It was like nails on a chalkboard. Well… maybe not that bad… but, all I could think about was her little teeth falling out of her mouth. Ha! Not like that would happen, but those were the dreams I kept having.

From what I’ve been reading about toddlers grinding their teeth, most stop around the age 6. Plus it’s probably not that hard on their teeth. So I will just have to ignore it for now, even though it makes me feel all crazy! Bah.

Do you or your kiddos grind teeth? I don’t grind my teeth… but I do clench my teeth when I’m stressed.

Aw, poor baby; hope she feels better soon! My little one used to grind her teeth too! Oh, it was so horrible to listen to. Luckily she has stopped!

I hope Ruari is feeling better! My mom would always yell at me for grinding my teeth when I was little, but I definitely don't do it anymore. I'm sure she'll outgrow it soon.

keep an eye on it. it can & will continue. my husband does it and now has grind guards. he needs to use them every single night. if not, he will have nubs and/or dentures by the time he is 40. when he does not use his guards or forgets he wakes up with horrible mouth pain. my son, who is 6, also grinds. since he still young and still has baby teeth we haven't pushed the issue with his dentist. as his baby teeth fall out & the adult teeth come in we will need to see what our options are.

Yikes. I can't stand that noise. I've never been a teeth grinder. Just thinking about it makes me shudder. But my daughter started doing it randomly during the day after she started getting teeth. I would stick my finger in her mouth or give her a teething toy to distract her. She only did it for a couple weeks.

See if you can get her checked at the dentist or ask your pediatrician. I use to grind my teeth it turned into TMJ later in life…and plus even though they are baby teeth it is bad on the jaw.

Oh no! I've clenched and ground my teeth since I was a child … I eventually, as an adult, had to get a motuh guard to wear every night to save my teeth. Of course I lost it and need a new one now, but it helped a lot!

I grind. I have bad jaw pain and headaches when I forget to sleep in my mouthguard (which, by the way, is super sexy). I've chewed through several mouthguards as well.

Chewed through? Wow! And, mouth guards are super sexy. 😉

I'm pretty sure when I'm really stressed out or worried about something, I clench my teeth in my sleep because often durring those times my jaw and teeth are sore when I wake. 🙁

Yeah, I do it during the day while I work… don't realize it until my jaw hurts. Darn that stress!

J grinds his teeth and so do I actually. My parents had to get me a night guard to wear, but I think it only was allowed once I had my permanent teeth in. Hopefully she grows out of it, unfortunatley its almost unconscious so its not something that can be fixed per se.

My 8 yo son was horrible with that. It sounded like he was chewing on rocks nightly. His dentist said that baby teeth don't have the same nerve endings that adult teeth do and that once he started to get his adult teeth in he would stop. With the amount of grinding he did I was skeptical but he has totally stopped. Good luck to you now though! It's not pleasant while it's happening but my son made it out with beautiful teeth and I'm sure your daughter will too!

That's good to hear… because, ouch! That sounds makes me want to grind my teeth.

My son is almost 4. We don't co-sleep but we have lately. He is learning what fears are. He shares a room with his sister. So rather than waking her up. I let him cuddle in our bed.

Teeth grinding is like nails on a chalk board, urgh i hate it! I hope she's feeling better today!

My daughter does this too. It drives me batty. I took her to the dentist because of it. They said the same thing – she will probably grow out of it. I don't think i could sleep with her – well I guess you didn't get much sleep. I hope she feels better.

She's still completely stuffed up today. She keeps telling me her nose feels "nosey". That makes me giggle… even though it's sad. 😉

I grind terribly. I also snap my jaw. My husband swears it sounds like a snapping turtle. I really should get a guard. It has been so many years and my jaw usually hurt during the day.

My husband has a guard, I think it could help. It helped him. 🙂

my 10-week-old thankfully doesn't have teeth to grind yet, but my husband grinds his teeth so if our baby takes after daddy, we're in for it! oh, and we DO cosleep so it'll be quite the teeth grinding party.

My daughter Ruby does! Her dentist doesn't seem overly concerned right now… she'll be 5 in December. I really hope she outgrows it… drives me bonkers!

I think I'm more of a teeth clencher. When my son starts grinding his teeth, I tell him to stop & then I try to distract him. I don't like the sound of it at all.

I grind my teeth at night and I never knew it until someone pointed it out to me. It is stress-related. I have a night guard now from my dentist that I wear. This has saved me from a lot of stress headaches and grinding my teeth down to nubbins.

    • The Paper Mama on said:

Ouch! Yeah, I'm hoping she stops at 6… cause I guess they give them night guards if they keep doing it. :/

      • Emily S. on said:

Yeah, I hope so too! I never knew that kids ground their teeth at night…now I know!

        • The Paper Mama on said:

I was so surprised when I first heard her doing it. I didn't realize it was a thing kids did….

When I get super stressed out I grind my teeth at night. But once I realize I'm doing it I can usually stop – which is so weird if you think about it. I hope she feels better soon!
