Hello. It’s Mike, Chelsey’s husband, and I’ve been asked to share my ultimate grilled cheese and ham sandwich with savory pickle and cheese spread with you. Why? Because I am the chef in the family and Chelsey thought you guys would enjoy my recipe.
I’ve teamed up with Eckrich Deli Meats to bring you this not so typical grilled cheese recipe. It’s a sandwich for two with a half-pound of delicious Eckrich Black Forest Ham. I chose Eckrich Black Forest Ham because the dry cured, smoked, traditional Black Forest ham taste will go so well with all of the cheese I used. In this sandwich, the Eckrich Deli Meat is topped with a cheese spread that is a play on pimento cheese (and it’s so good). All of this is sandwiched in between two pieces of sourdough bread. Grill that and to finish it off I crisp up Havarti cheese for the top.
Just a warning: this might turn into your favorite sandwich if you make it.
Did you see that each sandwich is enough for two people? When I use Eckrich Deli Meats I can make two of these sandwiches and quickly get this homemade meal on the table for my family of four. Eckrich Deli Meats are full of flavor and gluten-free. I spend less time in the kitchen and more time with my kids when I get home from working all day.
The hardest part of this recipe is waiting the 5 minutes it takes to grill it up so you can eat! The Eckrich Deli Meat really makes this meal. It would not be the same without it. You can find the Eckrich Black Forest Ham and other Eckrich Ham varieties at your local Walmart store. Be sure to check out your Walmart deli counter to pick up some freshly sliced Eckrich Deli Meats today.

The Ultimate Grilled Cheese and Ham Sandwich with Savory Pickle and Cheese Spread
For the Sandwich
- 1 lb. Eckrich Black Forest Ham
- 4 large slices sourdough bread
- 1 cup grated Havarti
- 1 tablespoon butter
For the Savory Pickle and Cheese Spread
- 2 cups grated gruyere
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup chopped up pickles
- 1/4 cup chili garlic sauce
- 1 chopped up garlic cloves
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- pepper to taste
Make the Savory Pickle and Cheese Spread
Toss all the ingredients, except the shredded cheese and pickles, into a food processor and process until it's a creamy sauce.
Add the pickles and shredded cheese to the processor. Pulse the mixture until the cheese and pickles are incorporated into the sauce. Set aside.
Assemble the Grilled Cheese and Ham Sandwich
Butter one side of each piece of bread and roll up the ham. Why roll the ham? This gives the cheese a chance to melt in between all of the delicious Eckrich Black Forest Ham slices.
Spread a layer of the savory pickle and cheese spread on the opposite sides of the buttered bread slices. Lay out a couple of layers of the rolled ham onto 1 slice of the bread with the cheese spread on it. Spread a bit more of the cheese spread over the ham rolls, and top it with another slice of bread (cheese spread side toward the ham).
Heat up a non-stick pan to medium heat. Grill each side of the sandwich. You're looking for a nice brown color on the bread. Remove the sandwich from the heat.
Sprinkle the grated Havarti onto the heated pan (make sure the cheese is the size of one piece of bread). Keep a close eye on the cheese so it doesn't burn. You'll want the bottom of the cheese to be a very light brown on the bottom. When the cheese reaches that point, place the sandwich on top of the cheese and grill until the cheese crisps up and adheres to your sandwich.
Remove from heat and enjoy!
