DAY 46 is brought to you by, the lovely Liz of Yellow Finch: Hi everyone! I’m Liz from Yellow Finch and I’m so excited to be here to share this DIY with you. When I was younger my parents went on a trip to England and brought home Christmas Crackers for the Holidays. I fell in love with this tradition and knew I wanted to carry it on with my children. To make it even more special I decided to make them myself and personalize them for each of my children, nephews and friends. Believe it or not, they are so easy to make!
Supplies:
Scrap booking paper (I used 12 x 12)
Contrasting paper
Empty toilet-paper roll
Craft glue
Ribbon
Small treats (candy, paper crowns, quotes, animals, ect.)
exacto knife
cracker snaps ** I omitted these for this project
Instructions:
1. Cut your main piece of scrap booking paper into 12 inch wide by 6 inch tall pieces of paper.
2. Place the empty toilet-paper roll in the middle of the paper
3. Using your exacto knife and a ruler make slits about 1/2 inch long next to the ends of the paper roll. This will make it easier to tie the ribbon.
4. Apply glue to the top edge of the paper and wrap the paper around the toilet paper roll. Allow to dry.
5. Use your ribbon to tie one end securely. Mine don’t close all the way so I cut out a circle, approximately 1 inch in diameter, and placed it inside of the roll.
6. Fill with goodies and close off the other end.
7. Glue another thick strip of contrasting scrap book paper onto the roll.
8. Crack open and enjoy!

I have made my own Crackers for years and I always have fun finding some little trinket to fill them with that can be useful or fun, instead of something that would be just tossed away. In my Crackers I usually include a Scratch lottery ticket, a chocolate, a fortune cookie, and some little gift or novelty item. These novelty items have changed over the years and I try and do them appropriate for men, women, or children, putting each person's name on them, so that they double as a place setting card. In the past, some of these novelty items have been mini flashlights or fishing lures for the men, and sample perfumes for the women. Over the years I have included kazoos for everyone, little fridge magnets with funny sayings, mini candles, key chains, mini pens, etc. The trinket I loved the best was that one year I found these tiny little hamsters in the toy department. Each was dressed differently and when their tummies were pressed would sing a different song that I tried to make appropriate for each individual. For instance, one was dressed as a little biker and sang the song, "Born To Be Wild"…one had a little brief case and sang, "She Works Hard For the Money", but my most favourite one was one I gave to the mother of my best friend. Hers had a little shirt on and sang the song, "I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt." Everyone loved them!
This is a great idea even for a Hanukkah dinner party, since it is often difficult to find appropriately themed crackers. I love the chocolate coins in there.
