The Magical Meet Make Do Trip.

Meet Make Do Palm Springs

Last week I went on a magical adventure and wandered down to Palm Springs for Meet Make Do. Seriously. Magical. The whole goal of this trip was to work with other crafty bloggers to get inspired and make things, and that’s exactly what we did. We were provided with the most amazing variety of craft supplies and tools to make whatever our hearts desired.

When I actually sat down to write about my Meet Make Do trip, I couldn’t think of what to say. It was just, well wonderful! I don’t know if I can really put into words how great it was. 100% what I needed. I’ve been to quite a few blogger-related conferences and gatherings, and this was one of the best. It was a small group of people and we had time to sit, chat, and really get to know each other. It just makes me all warm and fuzzy thinking back to our trip. These ladies were all so kind, sweet, and holy moly they were all so crafty and talented.

So, I’ll just quit the babbling and tell you what we did on the trip…

Wednesday night I flew into Palm Springs and we went straight to dinner at Workshop Kitchen + Bar. If you follow my Instagram, that’s the spot that had the MOST fantastic concrete tables! I keep thinking about them. …::need to make for my backyard::… The food was delicious and that night kicked off our Meet Make Do trip.

Thursday was when the real fun started. We woke up, ate some breakfast, then got to planning. Some ladies jumped right in to crafting, and other’s (like myself) took a little longer to start. There were so many supplies to choose from (check out the crafting-palooza-center photo below), I could not decide. Eventually we were all in our crafting groove (I’ll share what we all made in a future post).

We ate lunch by the pool, ate yummy desserts, took ALL the photos in the world, and the weather was so pretty (a perfect dry and 70ish degrees). The day ended with dinner at the Ace Hotel!

Friday we changed scenery a bit and moved our stay to The Saguaro, the most colorful hotel in the land! So, the thing about Friday. It rained. Yup. I guess Palm Springs gets like 7 days of rain a year, and our trip just happened to land on one of those days. Being a girl from the PNW, I’m used to the rain… but it wasn’t what I was really looking for while in a desert… Ha! The rain drops were HUGE and this created a bit of a “river” down the streets (their streets aren’t exactly prepared with any sort of rain drainage). Yeah. We were all soaked, but it was kinda fun, jumping over the water and checking out downtown Palm Springs.

Saturday morning was the day we all went home. It was a bitter-sweet day. I missed my kiddo SO much (cried when my husband and the kiddo picked me up from the airport), but I really miss the time I had with all these ladies. I canNOT wait to share all the projects everyone created! I’ll be sure to link them in a post when all the ladies share them, but you can also keep watch on their blogs (links below the photo).

11 things.

11 THINGS // thepapermama.com

11 things. I love this little meme. I’ve done it once in 2012 and once in 2013. It’s sort of fun to wander back and see my past answers…. PLUS: to check out the answers my readers shared in the comments. Love it. It’s 2014. I’m sitting here cozy on my sofa, watching a bit of Antiques Road Show (nerd alert) and I’m ready to do this again! I’m going to answer the questions I asked in 2013…. here goes:

1. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to?

Maybe I’m an odd case, but I really love my name. I guess if I HAD to change it… maybe Piper. I’ve always thought that was a fun and unique name.

2. Are you a collector of anything?

I’m always a collector of things. When I was little… I collected bears. All the bears. This moved on to mini antique tea cups. Now: I collect furniture. Ok, maybe I’m not really a collector anymore. These days I’m usually on the look out for gently used furniture to update the home.

3. What is your first thought when you wake up?

No.

4. Do you prefer sweet or salty foods?

Salty. Always.

5. Name one thing you miss about being a kid.

Sleeping whenever I wanted to.

6. Are you a morning or night person?

Lately I’m a night person. I stay up WAY too late… then I’m sleepy during the day.

7. List 5 items on your life’s to-do list:

- Save enough money for surrogacy.

- Master balance in my life.

- Illustrate a children’s book.

- Enjoy working out. Ha! Ok.

- Eat all the fried chicken.

8. Share one thing that people may not know about you.

Hmmmm. Well, I don’t really like sweet things. I love chocolate. I love apple pie, but all that other sweet stuff isn’t really for me. I think jelly beans are gross. Hee.

9. What is your all time favorite song, movie, and book?

- Favorite movie right now: Hmmm. Not sure. I did love Catching Fire.

- Favorite song right now: I LOVE this acoustic version of Wake Me Up. Aloe Blacc’s voice is amazing (guitar: Mike Einziger).

- Favorite book: I loved the Divergent series.

10. Do you have any hidden talents?

When no one is looking, I’m a good dancer.

11. Are you a really clean or super messy person?

I’m good at small details, but I always miss the big things. I’m a clean and messy person. Right in the middle.

My questions for you:

1. Are you a cat or dog person? Or, bird person?

2. What was your favorite food as a kid? Is it the same, or has it changed as an adult?

3. What is your favorite hobby?

4. If you HAD to move to a different state (or country) where would it be?

5. Are you a winter or summer person?

6. What makes you happy?

7. What is the weirdest question you’ve ever been asked?

8. 2. If you had to go on an adventure, with elves, dwarves, or hobbits, who would you take and why (question found here)?

9. 3. You are at a rural retreat lodge somewhere deep in Wisconsin or Canada. You are approached by a taxidermist who hands you a stuffed badger and asks you to put it in your lap. What do you do next (question found here)?

10. What was your first job?

11. What is your favorite utensil?

I’m opening this 11 questions meme to all of you! If you answer my questions, please come back and put a link in the comments. I’d really love to come and learn a bit about you! <3

Happy Tuesday,

It’s just about that time for Bacon Hearts.

Bacon Hearts Recipe and Tips // thepapermama.com

Way back in 2011 I made some bacon hearts. It was my budget/super romantic Valentine’s gift to the husband. I shared it on my blog and everyone loved it. They love it so much that each year around this time I start to get a lot of visitors here to check out my bacon. Hello new friends! The comments I get back from this creation bring about 50% successful hearts and 50% failed attempts. I’ve made these little guys quite a few times (with 2 failed attempts) and I want to share a couple tips with you before you get bakin’ that bacon (see what I did there, “bakin’/bacon”)! Anyway… these hearts even made there way into last year’s February Ladies’ Home Journal (with Miss Hoda and KLG, hee).

First tip: to get this to work you need thick and floppy bacon. Yeah, that sounds weird and I don’t really think the grocery stores are cool with you taking the bacon out of the packaging and shaking it. It’s sort of a trial and error thing, or buy a couple different brands of bacon. We have had a lot of luck with Costco’s Kirkland Brand bacon. It’s thick and floppy. Perfect for hearts.

Other tip: don’t forget about your baking bacon. It can burn fast, and those hearts aren’t as awesome if burnt. Still tasty (cause bacon), just not as awesome. Head on over to the original post to get the baking details.
