GIVEAWAY + Makeup stories

Girls Night Out Makeup // thepapermama.com

I’ve never been that great with makeup application. I don’t really know what I’m doing when putting on any makeup. It’s like a guessing game for me. I mean, I get mascara. I know how to do that (RANDOM FACT: my very first mascara was blue, oh the 90′s), but I WANT to know how to apply all the makeups, instead of constantly asking myself: – “What is this powder for?” – “How do I put 3 different shades of eye shadow on and make it look like that?” – “Oh, you mean that is supposed to look good when I put it on my face?” –  This leads to lots of searching for online makeup tutorials or removing makeup (so many times).

If I do mess up my makeup I’ll usually just say, “Pfft, oh well.” and move on. If I’m headed out on a date with my man or out for a girls’ night, I’ll try a bit harder. I might even start the whole thing over, especially if I screw up my eyeliner… multiple times. I’ve been using water and cotton swabs to start over, but turns out there’s actually something better: Eye makeup remover! Weirdly enough, this is my first time using an actual makeup remover. Almay sent me some Oil Free Gentle makeup remover, and it’s been working pretty awesome. Especially when starting over/correcting my eyeliner mistakes. I’ve been folding them into little corners to define the eyeliner edges. Works pretty well.

Wearing the makeups: Plus a GIVEAWAY!

Fancy Time // thepapermama.com

Remember my little goal to dress up at least 3 times a week? I set this goal in February and I’m happy to say I’ve stuck with it. I get out of my lazy/yoga pants and step into something lovely at LEAST 3 days a week (sometimes it’s four or five). I can tell this small change has helped my self-esteem. It’s just so simple, but getting dressed in a lovely skirt and some pretty tights changes my mood. I can feel my energy level go up, and I just plain feel better. Most days I can only manage to get my kiddo into “real clothes” and I wander out of the house with toothpaste on my face. Yeah… I even forget to look in the mirror. This goal also includes putting a small bit of makeup on, at least 3 times a week.

The majority of the time my makeup routine only consists of putting on mascara. Adding some length and darkness to my lashes makes me believe I’m not as tired as I feel. Ha! When I’m feeling super fancy, maybe on date nights, I’ll add a bit of lipstick.

I have really dry skin, and for that reason I don’t use foundation or cover up that often. Especially all over my face. It enhances the dry spots…  <—– Not my goal. I also love my freckles and never want to cover them, buuuut I do love it under my eyes (and to cover up the occasional blemish). I’ve yet to find something that really works for what I want (and at a price I can handle), but Almay sent me some Smart Shade Mousse to try out. I love it!

Fancy Time // thepapermama.com

It’s pretty neat. It starts off white (as seen on my finger above) and quickly changes to match the shade of my skin, like magic. P.S. A little goes a long way. It’s light and soft, and it smooths out to cover the darkness under my eyes.

Fancy Time // thepapermama.com

I’ve been using it almost nonstop for a week now. Even on the days I choose to wear yoga pants (and maybe have toothpaste on my face). It may be difficult to see a difference looking at my before and after photos in this post, but looking in the mirror at home: totally see it. I’ll be dressing up FOUR times this week. Date night tonight with the husband! Yay! That means cute shoes, a dress, and makeup! No yoga pants this time. Maybe I’ll add some eyeshadow (I’m trying out the Almay intense i-color)?

Three in one outfit: Aunt Louise + $100 Visa GC Giveaway!

I have traveled more in this last year than I have in the past 10 years before that. Every time I head out on a trip, I have this desire to buy all new outfits! I do not need to spend money on clothes for each and every trip (I mean, really), even though I want to. Ha! It’s just not necessary. I have a ton of lovely clothes at home and I try to create new and updated ways to wear the clothes I already have. WHICH means I need to take care of my clothes. My favorite pieces (my “fancy” clothes) are always hung to dry. I wash them in the washer, and line dry them to help preserve the quality.

In my attempt to save money and use what I already have, I like to see how many ways I can wear a favorite piece from my wardrobe. One of my best dress friends (yeah, my dresses and I are friends) is Aunt Louise. Yup. She’s been named. She’s fantastic. She’s lovely and sort of looks like she might have been made from the upholstery of a 60′s sofa…. oh man, I do love this dress.

Here’s my three-in-one outfit styling for Aunt Louise (P.S. I just did not want to put make-up on, so I now have a cat face):

Warm Weather: // Aunt Louise Dress: Anthropologie // Gold clutch: f21 // Shoes: Miz Mooz //

This is the perfect warm weather outfit. This dress is so comfortable and I love to wear it without a cardigan, as long as the weather is over 70. Ha!

Springy Weather: // Aunt Louise Dress: Anthropologie // Green bow sweater shirt: f21 // Gold scaly belt: thrift // Shoes: Lulu’s //

Sometimes I like to pretend this dress is a skirt…. that’s when I put on my little green bow sweater shirt and my amazing gold belt (a favorite thrift find).

Warm: // Aunt Louise Dress: Anthropologie // Scallop Cardigan: Anthropologie // Green Peter Pan Tights: h&m // Shoes: Skunkboy’s Closet //

This is my cool spring weather outfit. Most Oregon spring days are cool…. we get the random warm day, but mostly you’ll want a sweater (and probably an umbrella) while you’re out and about.

So, speaking of keeping my clothes… I was ALSO sent some Tide Pods. They are sort of like the lazy man’s detergent… which is fantastic! I’m personally not a fan of chores… laundry is right up there with cleaning the bathroom. Tide Pods makes my life easier. It’s a 3-in-1 detergent that cleans, brightens, and fights stains. Bam. Pretty much you just pop in that Tide Pods pac, and then you can stand out in your freshly awesome clothes. And they’re only 3-chamber unit dose on the market. Just one removes more stains than 6 caps of the liquid bargain brand. (Based on stain removal performance of one pac of Tide Pods vs. 6 doses of the leading liquid bargain brand base variant in a standard top loading machine.) I put these little pods in a cute jar in the laundry room. SO much cuter than a plastic jug of laundry detergent. Have you tried these yet?

One more thing: Tide Pods wants to give one of my special readers a $100 Visa Gift card to play with! Yeah! You can buy a new outfit and some Tide Pods! Just answer this question in the comments below: Tell me about something in your wardrobe that’s versatile and provides 3-in-1 style.

Movie Time: Side Effects

Let’s step out of my norm blog post and try something new… I was offered the chance to watch a movie and review it. The husband and I love movies. If we have a date night, it’s usually good food and a movie. While I’m more of the romantic comedy or documentary kinda girl, I do enjoy a thriller (even though I sit through the entire movie holding my breath). The movie I want to chat about today is Side Effects, a pharmaceutical thriller. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to an early preview of Side Effects, so I can only guess at what the movie will be like… based on it’s trailer.

Here goes: The trailer starts off happy enough. We get to see the handsome Channing Tatum (sadly I don’t think he’ll be stripping as Magic Mike in this film, but you still get to look at him) and what I believe to be his wife (Rooney Mara, from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). They enjoy some champagne and take a nap on a boat. Seems like a pretty good time. BUT THEN, things seem to change and Rooney (the wife) needs to take some drugs. Possibly from panic attacks? Maybe there’s a deep seeded fear of boats? Whatever it is, Rooney is finally getting that much needed sleep and she has more energy.

Wait, there’s a death! It was murder! Who died? I don’t know. BUT, it looks like Rooney has gotten herself into a bit of trouble… and Mr. Jude Law (her psychiatrist) may be involved. Is there an affair going on? Hmmm. Why doesn’t she have a lawyer for this mess? Why does she keep talking about Jude Law (I would talk about him if he was my doctor)? What’s up Jude? Did you create this mess, or is there something more sinister going on?

Enter Catherine Zeta-Jones as the bad guy/lady. Catherine has prescribed a new drug for Rooney, which is probably an experimental drug with crazy side effects. Is Rooney losing her mind? Did Jude do something naughty? I do not know. I will have to watch the movie when it comes out. February 8th, 2012.

This is a Steven Soderbergh movie. The majority of the time I enjoy his movies, so I think it’s a safe bet that I will enjoy this one. I am excited to see it. I mean… I loved these: Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Eleven, annnnd Magic Mike (hee)!

Why are you excited to see Side Effects?

Answer that question in the comments below AND you are automatically entered to win 2 nights at a New York City hotel, airfare for two to New York City from the continental United States and a $50 movie gift card. What? Yeah. If you would like to see what others are saying about this movie, check out their Twitter and Facebook.
