DIY Jewelry Roll

I travel quite a but, so that’s why I really wanted to make this DIY Jewelry Roll. I typically put all my jewelry in a little pouch, then spend about 15 minutes detangling the necklaces, bracelets, and earrings I’ve packed. In the past I have broken a necklace while trying to unravel a nasty tangle. It was a sad day. That’s what this Jewelry Roll (that I made for HP Create) is for. It works SO well and only requires basic sewing skills.

Supplies:

• one placemat
• 16 inches of Pom Pom ribbon
• two yards of 1 inch thick ribbon (color and material is your choice)
• 45 inches of leather strip
• 7 circle snaps size 12 mm (.5 inch)
• one 2 x 12 inch strip of felt
• sewing machine
• scissors
• Iron­On Transfer paper
• iron
• Optional: Jewelry Roll Printable

Directions:

STEP 1: Prep the ribbon strips that will hold your necklaces. Cut out six strips at 7 inches long. Fold one side of a strip in about a 1/2 inch and fold in twice. Sew that folded section (to prevent ribbon fray). Repeat the above for all six ribbon strips.

Prep the ribbon section that will hold your rings. Cut out one strip at 13 inches long. Fold one side of a strip in about a 1/2 inch and fold in twice. Sew that folded section (to prevent ribbon fray).

For all the six 7 inch strips and the one 13 inch section: Install one side of the button snap over each sewn spot in the ribbon (see photo above). Repeat the above for all the ribbon.

Tip #1: If you don’t want to sew all the ribbon strips, you could instead use felt. Strips of felt would work perfectly for the necklace strips. For the necklace strips: cut the felt to 1 inch wide by 4 inches long and install one side of the button snap. For the ring section: cut the felt to 1 inch wide by 12 inches long and install one side of the button snap. You won’t need to sew the ends, since felt doesn’t fray.

STEP 2: Let’s install the other end of the button snap on the opposite end of each ribbon strip. Fold in the end of the strip about 1 inch and fold in twice. Sew the folded end to secure the ribbon. Repeat for all 7 ribbon pieces (this includes the ring section).

Install the other end of the snap about ¾ of an inch in from the end on all of the ribbons.

STEP 3: Prep the necklace ribbon strips, ring section, and felt strip for sewing. Start with the ring section and pin it to the left side if the mat (about 1 inch in from the edge). Next you’ll pin the felt earring strip, and then all size of the necklace ribbon strips. Evenly space the items on the placemat, and the tops of the strips should be about 1 inch from the top edge of the placemat.

To secure, sew a line across the tops of the ring section, earring felt piece, and all the necklace strips to secure them to the placemat.

When the strips are sewn onto the mat, install the other end of the ring section snap to the placemat. Just mark the location where the ribbon snap meets the mat, and install the remaining snap pieces here.

STEP 4: On the right side of the mat (or the side with the necklace strip), mark the center of the edge on the backside of the mat. Sew the middle of your leather strip to this spot.

STEP 5: Optional: Print out your jewelry roll printable. Cut the strips of words out and iron them onto the outside of your placemat (following the iron on transfer paper directions). For my placemat, I needed two rows of words to run along the long side of my placemat.

STEP 6: Pin the Pom poms to the right edge of the mat (where the leather strip is). Pin and then sew the Pom poms to the mat, sewing over the center of the leather strip.
