Learning to dress myself.

I feel like I’m learning ALL over again how to dress myself…  when I had Miss R: I wore pajamas about 90% of the time for a year…. or 2… hee…  and, I  lost touch with any style or understanding of how to dress myself! I know how I used to dress…. when I didn’t have an insecurity with my post-baby-belly. I still have all those tighter shirts and “hello girls” low-cut tops…. but, that’s not me. I don’t think it ever really was me. Who really wants to see my stretch-marked cleavage anyway (besides Jess)?

So, here I am. Exploring my new/mom/style self. I have absolutely NOooooo idea what the hoo-hey I’m doing… are there really rules to dressing? I don’t know ’bout that: BUT, I do know what I like and I’m loving it. One of the best things I did for getting out of my mommy style rut… was to to start participating in Steppin Out Saturdays on Harper’s Happenings. It sort of made me try. And, care about what I was wearing again.

I love vintage style. I love romantic flowy tops. SHOES. I love shoes. I love crazy fun shoes! I love jeans. So much. My skinny jeans are my friends. I love love love skirts. Big/full skirts. Sweet sweet vintage-cut dresses. I love styling my hair for fun. I love red lipstick. So much. I love my tattoos. I want more tattoos. I get a serious high from a good thrift find. I love red. And, teal. Mustard. Gold! Things with antlers and hearts on them. Colorful jackets. Cozy sweaters. Comfy scarves. I love it.

Do you know your style?

P.S. Today is the last day to win a custom drawing from me. Share your self portrait here!

Dressing myself? Bwahahaha! Good luck there, I seriously need a stylist or a well dressed friend to take me under thier wings. Lose a little more weight and at least I won't feel so guilty buying new clothes…why is that?

Seriously love this outfit!! Where did you get those shoes?

Thank you for sharing this. I am coming out of the fog of new baby motherhood with number 2. It is so easy to rock the sweats all day and go through the motions. I am excited to figure out my new style. It does change after motherhood, but the whole mom thing does not have to limit you. You’ve inspired me to do a closet cleanse and get motivated. Thanks!

I have two children. One is 9 and the other is 2. I went through the same thing after the birth of each one. I guess it takes a little time to get your groove back. I always try to wear my skinny jeans and cute shoes or boots for my casual look. I also feel like fun accessories and a fashionable coat help bump things up a notch. And, when I go out with the hubby or volunteer at my son's school, I like to wear dresses just because I can.

    P.S. I love your style <3

It's like you took the words right out of my mouth. I'm going through the SAME thing. Finding my style again. And I am also finding that my previous style is nothing like what I am loving now. Love your outfit by the way!

I have let my style go for so long. I love fashion. I always have. But, once I started having kids it was hard adapting to my new body image. I'm not completely at home with it yet and if there ARE rules to dressing myself – I'm not sure I'm familiar with them. I just know the stuff I like and I aim for it. 😀 I think that's really all we can do.

pps – can i have your "hello girls" tops? 😀

  • gawkylu on said:

ps – i love your style, you are fabbbbb.

my style *just* changed, it seems to be morphing into a more lady-like version of the knee-sock lovin', clashing print monster of yesterday. i still love my clashy prints, but now with accessories, nice boots, and more tailored clothing. i'm starting to gravitate towards clothes with nicer fabrics that feel yummy. i thrift 90% of my clothes, and have begun buying things out on instinct: things i'm drawn to but not convinced they're fabulous. amazingly, THOSE are the clothes i get the most compliments on! so i trust my instinct and lady it up…

I love your style and I admire it so much! I am still VERY much a jeans and a t-shirt kind of gal, but I love dressing up when I get the chance! I wear jammies most days – I'm like Mandy – I can't reason with myself to dirty them when no one else is going to see them!

Ha ha! I totally get that. Just more laundry at the end of the week. 😉

So get you. Am still trying to get a grip on this style thing. I used to be hip but after a long pregnancy, I just can't seem to remember what to do with clothes without an elastic waist. Oh the dilemmas of life 😉

I have ZERO idea what my style is, really. I know during the week, I am Buttoned Up Accounting Firm Girl, but I have recently (like, in the last two years) started to get out of a decade long rut of wearing hoodies, skate tees and Converse every day. Along the way in this mission, I've discovered a few things I really, really like (skinny jeans and flats, holla!) but still wouldn't really say that I have a style. I just wear what I like and what feels good… and I guess that's really all that matters. 🙂

I don't know how to dress 10 months postpartum me. I have yet to discover my mommy style. My shoes were just stolen, so i feel even more lost. Sigh…

    You, however, look adorable!

  • Raquel on said:

You look lovely! I feel like a lot of moms go through the same thing. It's been two years since I had my daughter and only now am I attempting to get out of my "jeans, sweats, and t-shirt" wardrobe and back into some style. Minus the cleavage baring shirts. Stretchmarks totally had it out for me. 🙁 LOL!

Thank you for this post! It's nice to know there are a lot of us out there!

    • The Paper Mama on said:

There really are. You're just such a different person after having a kid. 🙂

I've been wearing yoga pants and a tshirt around the house for 2 years lol. And I've gotten into the habit of just slipping on some flats and going out like that on a regular basis. I need to knock it off. After last week's blogger meet up I decided to start doing the Steppin' out to really force myself to TRY and to CARE about what I wear again. My body is way different than it was before kids. I used to be pear shape and now I'm getting closer to hourglass….but still pear. I have no idea what I'm doing.

    Here's to trying!

I've been meaning to participate in Mandy's link up for a while, but I find I don't ever go anywhere during the weekends…so usually I am in my jammies or yoga gear

    • The Paper Mama on said:

We don't usually go anywhere either. But, I still try and put "real" clothes on. I feel so much better when I do. 🙂

  • Beth Anne on said:

    I don’t know. ::sigh::

In the office, it was pencil skirts & heels & pretty tops with blazers but I always felt more “funky” on the inside than I dressed. But then I look at bright aqua jeans & think, “no, that’s not me either.” But I’m kinda too fat for vintage & I need the flowy tops to hide my momma pudge, but I still love Talbots & Old Navy at the same time.

Now I’m home & today I’m wearing yoga pants & a fleece with a messy ponytail & I feel so sloppy & still not like me, but oh man, am I comfortable!

    So I just don’t know.

    • The Paper Mama on said:

I'm definitely about feeling comfy too. My cute outfits just can't be uncomfortable. That's why some of my favorite outfits are usually flowy dresses with stretchy leggings underneath. 🙂 So soooo comfy.

totally can relate with this post, my body has changed multiple times since having my daughter and she's only 2! I think it's important not to get into a rut, I really appreciate you posting this!

It's so hard. Mandy's weekly challenges have really helped me.

    Chelsea,
    I so appreciate this post…because right now I'm in that post-10 month baby sweats wearing attitude. I have an interview next week and last night I was trying on clothes from my pre-baby days…and by the end of my 30 minutes of trying on outfits, I felt defeated. I'm trying to figure out my new style…grrr. Will clothes ever look right again? And, seriously, no one wants to see the stretch-marked cleavage that now appears. Your post gives me some hope that there is light at the end of my "style" tunnel. (;

    • The Paper Mama on said:

I'm so glad! Yes, it does get easier. I think the biggest thing for me was to realize I'm not the same person as I was before pregnancy. You can do it!

  • JennyRain on said:

Ok, you are so rockin the cuteness here! I can see where Ruari gets her style. LOVE those shoes… you are totally a shoe girl!

For me, if I have a cool pair of shoes, I dress from the toes up… shoes first, and then decorate the outfit around them. I've struggled w/"s "style" for the last 2 years because (1) I've gained weight, and (2) I've gained weight… ugh. Plus I'm on a tight budget… so that makes clothing shopping (clothes that fit me) not so fun… Your courage in rediscovering your style might just inspire me!

    • The Paper Mama on said:

I definitely suggest thrifting. It is SO much harder to find clothes… but, you can find some amazing stuff for so cheap. And, I sell a lot of my old clothes consignment. And, turn around and use that money on clothes. Ha!

  • Mandy Chiappini on said:

I'm not sure what my style is, but I do know that I still wear my PJ's all day (when I'm home). I refuse to get dressed and put make up on when I'm just sitting at home… and that will never change. Ha ha. BUT I have definitely enjoyed taking a little more time to "get ready" before I go out anywhere. After this baby comes and I lose the weight (hopefully!!), I want to totally makeover my closet. With what? I'm not entirely sure.. I will just kinda go with it when the time comes I guess!

    • The Paper Mama on said:

I love a little mascara. Even when I'm just sitting at home. It's lovely. And, I will have to go shopping with you when you make over your closet! Fun fun fun.

I'm not sure if I know my style yet, but I'm trying! It's just a journey I think to find out what looks good and works for our bodies. And I am in LOVE with your shoes.

    • The Paper Mama on said:

It really is a journey. And, it's a great excuse for me to go thrifting more… 😀

  • imlivinginadream on said:

You have such a cute style! Love those shoes. My style is very random and depends on how I'm feeling. Some days I feel more casual, and other days I really want to dress up more. But I love colorful, printed shirts, skirts, printed tights, comfy jeans and ballet flats. And of course some accessories! Hehe 🙂

  • Tara on said:

you have a beautiful style! I love it!

I am also trying to dress myself better for what looks good on my body too, i am a slow learner. 🙂 But I am not sure what my style is yet.

    • The Paper Mama on said:

Yes. There's a lot of trial and error. But, at least the process is fun!

  • mel on said:

I think you look gorgeous! For someone who 'doesn't know how to dress themselves' you sure fooled me.. ;o) I think it's key
you stick with what YOU love… and the confidence will shine through and make it a fantastic outfit… I'm not one for fashion
rules or trends, just wear what you love and you'll love what you wear (sounds like Dr.Suess…)…
I do wish you were wearing 'antlers' here tho…. hehe.
    have a beauty week!

i know my style now. again. it has changed a lot in my life as i have gone through different stages and motherhood definitely had a huge impact on my style for a while. all of the sudden i felt like i couldn't be the fun/edgy dresser i used to be because i was a mom. the fact that i had to only breast feed (because Lily wouldn't take anything else) also put a dent in my style for a good year. but now i'm all good again. you will find that as you get older, as you grow and as your body changes, you will grow out of certain styles and will have to rediscover yourself again. and again. i'm 39. i know these things 😉

  • Lindsay on said:

I still don't know my style, I'm just NOW wanting to get out of my pajamas and/or tshirt stage post baby from April ;0) I love comfortable, but I love timeless classics since I tend to keep items of clothing for as long as I possibly can. I always love your Steppin' Out Saturday posts 🙂

    • The Paper Mama on said:

I still love my jammies. But, it is nice to dress up on the weekends. I try to at least do my hair and makeup if I plan on wearing jammies all day. 🙂

  • Kara on said:

Yay! So happy you're getting back into it. I feel like I'm getting myself into the same boat. I'm in my pajamas any time I'm not at work or church. Like right now. 🙂 Good luck!!

    • The Paper Mama on said:

Yes. I'm actually in my jammies right now. 😉 Ha! But, my hair and makeup are done. Hee!

  • casey on said:

I know exactly what you mean. I too wore jammies or yoga pants for the first year of my kid's life and now with such a tiny budget and a bunch of clothes that are no longer my style it's hard to dress the way I want. I am honing in on my style too though and I'm determined to rock it soon enough! lol You look fabulous! The shoes are awesome!
